Hastelloy Pipe Equivalent Grades

Hastelloy is a family of nickel-based corrosion-resistant alloys known for their high strength and excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive media. Equivalent grades of Hastelloy pipes refer to alternative alloys that offer similar or comparable properties, making them suitable substitutes for specific applications. Here are some common equivalent grades of Hastelloy pipes:

Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276):

Equivalent Grades: Inconel 276, Nicrofer 5716, W.Nr. 2.4819

Hastelloy C22 (UNS N06022):

Equivalent Grades: Inconel 22, Nicrofer 5621, W.Nr. 2.4602

Hastelloy B2 (UNS N10665):

Equivalent Grades: Nimofer 6928, W.Nr. 2.4617

Hastelloy X (UNS N06002):

Equivalent Grades: Inconel HX, Nicrofer 4722, W.Nr. 2.4665

These equivalent grades are often used interchangeably based on the specific requirements of a given application. For example, Hastelloy C276 and Inconel 276 are considered equivalents due to their similar chemical composition and corrosion resistance, making them suitable for applications where resistance to harsh chemical environments is critical.

It's essential to consider factors such as temperature, pressure, and the specific corrosive media when selecting an equivalent grade for Hastelloy pipes. Each alloy has unique characteristics that may make it more suitable for certain conditions. Users should refer to industry standards and specifications, such as ASTM and ASME, to ensure compliance and proper material selection for their intended applications.

Hastelloy Pipe Mechanical Properties

Hastelloy pipes exhibit remarkable mechanical properties, contributing to their widespread use in demanding industrial applications. The mechanical properties of Hastelloy pipes are dependent on the specific alloy grade but generally include the following key characteristics:

Tensile Strength: Hastelloy pipes demonstrate high tensile strength, allowing them to withstand significant loads and pressures. Tensile strength is typically measured in pounds per square inch (psi) or megapascals (MPa).

Yield Strength: The yield strength of Hastelloy pipes represents the stress at which the material begins to deform plastically. It is a crucial parameter for assessing the material's ability to withstand applied forces.

Elongation: Elongation measures the ability of the material to deform before fracture. Hastelloy pipes often exhibit good elongation, indicating ductility and toughness.

Hardness: The hardness of Hastelloy pipes is an important factor in determining their resistance to wear and deformation. Different alloy grades may have varying levels of hardness.

Impact Resistance: Hastelloy pipes generally possess excellent impact resistance, making them suitable for applications where resistance to sudden shocks or dynamic loading is essential.

It's important to note that these mechanical properties can vary between different grades of Hastelloy and specific values are typically provided by Hastelloy pipe manufacturer or specified in industry standards such as ASTM. Engineers and designers consider these mechanical properties when selecting Hastelloy pipes for applications in corrosive and high-temperature environments, ensuring the material's ability to withstand operating conditions.

Chemical Composition of Hastelloy Pipe

Hastelloy pipes are primarily composed of nickel, molybdenum, and chromium, with varying amounts of iron, tungsten, and cobalt depending on the grade. Typical elements include:

  • Nickel (Ni): Enhances corrosion resistance and toughness.
  • Molybdenum (Mo): Improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
  • Chromium (Cr): Adds oxidation resistance.
  • Iron (Fe): Balances structure and improves strength.

Hastelloy pipe Material

Hastelloy pipes are made from Hastelloy alloys, which are a family of high-performance, nickel-based alloys known for their exceptional corrosion resistance, high-temperature strength, and versatility in challenging environments. The most common types of Hastelloy alloys used for manufacturing pipes include Hastelloy C276, Hastelloy C22, Hastelloy B2, and Hastelloy X, among others.

Hastelloy C276 is one of the most widely used alloys for pipes and contains significant amounts of nickel, molybdenum, and chromium, providing excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive chemicals, including harsh acids.

Hastelloy C22 offers improved corrosion resistance in oxidizing and reducing environments compared to C276 and is particularly well-suited for applications involving chlorides.

Hastelloy B2 is known for its resistance to hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and other aggressive chemicals. It is a solid solution-strengthened alloy with significant amounts of nickel and molybdenum.

Hastelloy X is designed for high-temperature applications and exhibits good oxidation resistance. It contains nickel, chromium, iron, and molybdenum.

These alloys are carefully engineered to provide a balance of different elements, ensuring the resulting Hastelloy pipes possess the required mechanical and corrosion-resistant properties for demanding industrial applications, such as chemical processing, petrochemical, aerospace, and marine environments.

Hastelloy Pipe Price and Its Determinants

The cost of Hastelloy pipes is influenced by several factors, including the material grade (C22, C276, B2, B3), pipe type (seamless, welded, or ERW), dimensions such as outer diameter, wall thickness, and length, as well as customization requirements and order volume. Additionally, market fluctuations in nickel and molybdenum prices also play a significant role in determining the final price. As one of the established Hastelloy pipe suppliers, Tricon Steel & Alloys manufacturer of Hastelloy pipes, offers competitive pricing while ensuring premium quality standards.

Hastelloy Pipe Manufacturing Process

The Rolling and Welding Stage

To begin our process, we first need to go through the rolling and welding stage. The stainless steel is placed through a checking process and cut at the edges in this stage.

Cleaning and Warming Stage

The rolled stainless steel pipes thus manufactured are cut to the required lengths depending upon the industrial demand.

Cold-Drawing Stage

Sometimes, the required size isn’t obtained when the steel is brought through the mill directly. When using the cold-drawing process, the desired size is achieved when the pipes and tubing are coated with oxalic and soap solution and dragged over die plugs—the oxalic and soap solution help reduce friction when going through the cold cycle.

The Finishing Process

The final process is the finisher. Once the process of manufacturing stainless steel pipes and tubing is completed, you’ll now have to take them to a jet printer.
