Super Duplex S32750 Plates: What Engineers Should Check Before Procurement

SS Pipes

Ordering Super Duplex S32750 plates on the alloy name alone creates risk before the material reaches a fabrication shop. The UNS number confirms the grade, not which specification governs the order, whether chemistry and mechanical properties match the project, or whether the mill provides traceability documentation at handover. Engineers and procurement teams evaluating a super duplex steel plates supplier need to verify these details before the purchase order goes out.

Confirm the Grade and Applicable Specification

UNS S32750 identifies the alloy, but a purchase order needs more than a UNS number. Buyers should confirm the project requires ASTM A240, the specification that sets the chemical and mechanical limits mills use to certify plate. Super Duplex 2507 names the same grade, and matching both terms to UNS S32750 plates avoids confusion at quotation. Some specifications add requirements beyond ASTM A240, such as extra impact testing, so the exact revision matters as much as the grade name.

Verify Chemical Composition and Mechanical Properties

Chemistry and mechanical properties determine how a plate performs in service, and both should be checked against the applicable specification.

Chemical Composition

ASTM A240 sets the compositional range for UNS S32750: chromium between 24% and 26%, nickel between 6% and 8%, molybdenum between 3% and 5%, nitrogen between 0.24% and 0.32%, and carbon at 0.03% maximum. This chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen balance pushes the pitting resistance equivalent number above 40, well ahead of standard duplex grades, while the nickel content maintains the austenite to ferrite ratio the microstructure depends on.

Mechanical Properties

Yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation each need confirmation against the specification before a mill test certificate is accepted. ASTM A240 sets minimum yield strength at 80 ksi (550 MPa), minimum tensile strength at 116 ksi (795 MPa), and minimum elongation at 15%.

Evaluate Corrosion Resistance for the Intended Service

Engineers should assess chloride concentration, temperature, and exposure duration before assuming S32750 will outperform lower alloyed grades. Seawater systems, brine handling equipment, and offshore process lines expose plates to pitting and crevice corrosion that shifts with chloride level and flow condition. Chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking becomes a concern at elevated temperatures, a point where standard austenitic grades already show their limits. S32750 does not suit every corrosive environment; service conditions specific to a project should guide the material decision.

Check Plate Dimensions, Thickness and Surface Requirements

Thickness, width, length, and dimensional tolerances should be confirmed early, since these details affect both the quotation and the mill’s processing schedule. Required quantity, surface condition, and any cutting requirements to as-ordered sizes need the same confirmation before the purchase order is finalized.

Review Testing, Inspection and Material Traceability

Documentation requirements vary by purchase specification and project. Most orders call for a Mill Test Certificate referencing the heat number, chemical analysis, and mechanical test results for the specific batch supplied. Heat number traceability lets a client trace a plate back to its original heat during an audit or a failure investigation. Positive Material Identification and third-party inspection apply where the project specification requires them.

Consider Fabrication and Welding Requirements Before Ordering

Super duplex plates carry higher strength than conventional austenitic grades, which affects forming and bending force during fabrication. Welding needs controlled heat input to preserve the austenite to ferrite balance in the weld metal and heat affected zone; excessive heat input shifts that ratio and reduces corrosion resistance at the weld.

When Should You Choose S32750 Over Duplex 2205?

The choice between Duplex 2205 and Super Duplex S32750 depends on required corrosion resistance, strength, chloride exposure, and cost. 2205 handles demanding general service at a lower alloying cost, while S32750 suits environments where chloride exposure or strength requirements exceed what 2205 reliably delivers.

S32750 should not automatically replace 2205 on every project. The correct choice depends on matching the grade to the service environment and the project specification.

What to Ask a Super Duplex Steel Plates Supplier Before Ordering

A dependable super duplex steel plates supplier should answer each of these questions clearly before a purchase order is confirmed:

  • What material specification will the plates meet?
  • Can the required dimensions and thickness be supplied?
  • Are Mill Test Certificates provided with the material?
  • Is heat-level traceability available?
  • What inspection and testing documentation is available?
  • Can PMI or third-party inspection be arranged where required?
  • Can the plates be supplied according to project-specific requirements?
  • What is the expected delivery schedule?
  • What documentation will accompany the shipment?
